This series of paintings evolved from some experiments I was doing with cutout line graphics, and when I lived with them for a while I found my brain was interpreting them in different ways each time I looked at them, turning forms inside out, making shapes appear alternately hollow, then raised.
I decided to explore that concept further on canvas, introducing variation in tone, to bring some 'surfaces' forwards and send others backward.
I enjoy how even with the variation in tone the brain has difficulty resolving the drawn form delineated by the lines. What is in front? What is behind? Which way is the perspective shifting?
