Parkin Drawing Prize 2021

Well, this is very exciting for me - I've been shortlisted for the Parkin Prize 2021, Aotearoa New Zealand’s premier award for drawing. It promotes drawing in all its forms – as discovery, a testing of ideas, and decision making. Winners will be announced on August 2nd.

There are 80 finalists shortlisted, selected from over 560 entrants this year. The exhibition opens to the public from August 3rd - 29th, at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington.

The definition of 'drawing' is very broad in the context of this competition, and my entry is a wall sculpture that explores drawing in three dimensions.

My entry ‘Aggregate' explores the notion of drawing in space. Drawing with shadows, lines that are lines, line that aren’t lines, lines that move throughout the day, shadows as lines. Three dimensions that aren’t. Drawing with light and line. Intersecting forms that morph as your perspective changes. Exploring the intersection between drawing and sculpture, between the flat surface and three dimensions.

I actually began working on this sculpture concept several years ago, and it was shelved for a very long time. I decided to finish it this year. Being a part of this exhibition is a great boost right now, especially as this medium is something a bit different for me. Depending on the orientation and the lighting of the sculpture, it looks quite different from various angles:

The major prize winner of this year’s Parkin Prize was Mark Braunias, shown below.
